Rev. Steve Byers was born on May 12, 1963 in Lexington, Virginia, and is currently 45 years old. He met his wife Amy in 1990 and they were married on December 7, 1991. A native of Virginia, Amy is a graduate of Carson-Newman College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and has worked as a Music Educator in the public school system. Rev. Byers has one daughter who was born on February 21, 2005 in South Korea. Hannah Byers was adopted by Steve and Amy in July of 2005. Steve’s hobbies include swimming, tennis, and volleyball, playing the French horn, musical drama and computers.
Rev. Byers graduated cum laude from James Madison University in 1986. He received a Bachelor of Music Education with a major in Instrumental Music and a minor in Voice. While in college he played in the marching band, symphony and concert band. He had the distinction of playing in the All-American Marching Band in 1994. He also served as Music Director of Buena Vista Baptist Church from 1983-1986 during his time in college. Rev. Byers received a Master of Church Music Degree with a major in Church Music and Voice from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1989. While in seminary he served as Minister of Music and Youth at First Baptist Church Fishersville, Kentucky, and served as Music Associate at Highland Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.
After graduation from seminary, Steve became the Associate Minister for Music and Youth at Bethel Baptist Church in Salem, Virginia, where he served from 1990-1993. He was ordained in 1990 by the Bethel Church. His second congregation was the First Baptist Church of Albemarle, North Carolina. He served this church from 1993-1997 as Associate Pastor for Music and Youth Ministry.
In 1997, Rev. Byers became the Associate Pastor in Music Ministry at First Baptist Church of Asheboro, North Carolina, where he served for ten years.
Rev. Byers has been active in North Carolina Baptist life. He has sung with the Baptist Singers and played with the Convention Brass Ensemble. He leads revivals and has participated in mission trips and led workshops in both youth and music ministry in Virginia and North Carolina. He is a 2000 graduate of the Young Leaders Program of the Center for Congregational Health which is sponsored by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. He has sung in a men’s quartet and is a special guest performer at conferences, revivals and community events.
